I have seen Cheryl Day on television on Milk Street and just love her. I got her cookbook (actually, I have 2 of them) and loved it! She and her husband had a bakery in Savannah, GA called Back in the Day Bakery and the cookbook comes from the recipes they chose for the baker. I used to travel down to Savannah in another lifetime and would have loved to visit her bakery to try all of the goodies!
My absolute favorite recipe is on page 14, Buttermilk Biscones. That page has a light dusting of flour on it which reminds me of my favorites. These biscones are a cross between a biscuit and a scone and are delightful. They are as easy as a biscuit to make and just can't be beat. I've used them for the shortcake in strawberry shortcake which was a winner for sure. I have not included the dried fruit yet because I just haven't had any on hand and they are delish without it. One of these little beauties with some jam or jelly...oh my! My mom gave me a recipe from my grandmother used to make for grapefruit marmalade that I'll bet would be amazing on these biscones! I've never made the grapefruit marmalade but I might have to try it out!
This book has everything from Blueberry Muffins and Cinnamon-sugar Doughnut Muffins to Cinnamon-Sour Cream Coffee Cake and Snickerdoodles. I can just smell the goodness as I read this cookbook! The one recipe I have not tried yet but is on my to-do list is found on page 68, Pinkies Chocolate Lunchbox Treats. These little cakes look just like the Hostess Sno Balls from my childhood. Who could resist that??
I am a Red Velvet Cake nut so any book with a Red Velvet recipe is okay with me. I have made many a version of this classic cake and it is a favorite in my house. There are many other classics too like Coconut Cake which is no Southern dessert table is complete without and of course Bourbon Pecan Pie. Pretty much all of your sweet tooth cravings are in this book. Take your pick-cookies, pie, cake, candy. Yes please.
Now, there are some savories too. White Bean Soup, Bacon-Jam Empanadas, and Ham and Cheese Pastry Puffs to name a few. And Baked Eggs baked in ramekins with Swiss chard and grits, come on people! I think I made that one with spinach because that's what I had on hand. I love grits and the combo in this recipe in those little ramekins of joy did not disappoint.
